the Preliminary Joke

So what is the point of the Preliminary round in Men's Ice Hockey at Olympics? Germany Play Canada and lose 8-2 (Go Canada) in a game they shouldn't have even been at. Lost? Germany didn't win or tie a game in the first 3 games yet they make it to the 2nd round. What money grab! The whole point of the first round is to see what teams can move forward...but with the Olympics' all it is for is to see which 4 teams get a game bye. Doesn't really make sense and things bother me when they don't make sense! The good news is the Canadian boys got another game to practice together and that can and better make us Stronger.

Beards, Fuzzy Guitars, killer riffs and Dr. Martins boots? yup It's ZZ Top!

So Last night, I finally had a chance to see a band I was familiar with since 1983...ZZ Top!

Oh sure, the same 3 guys with beards have been playing together since 1969 when they formed, but this was my first chance. And if you're saying to yourself, 3 beards? Well yeah, Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill have actual long beards but drummer Frank, his last name is beard! hehe sneaky eh!

It had everything I could ask for in the show, some hot chicks on stage delivering Billy his blues hat, Fuzzy Guitars that they used for a couple of songs and even video clippings of their Eliminator phase through the 80's where they used the ZZ Top Hot Rod and the Hot Chicks in their videos. That is also the era when I became aware of them, with many thanks to lots of video play on Muchmusic back in the day.

Grey Cup People!!!

The Grey Cup - 100 years!

I've been living in Canada for 28 years and this past Monday at Morgan's Pub I was finally lucky enough to see and touch the Grey Cup...yupper's Canada's Football Trophy, and little did I know what I was in store when it came to the history!

The first team to ever win the trophy was the University of Toronto in 1909, it was presented as an Amateur Rugby league prize...but the game was further away from English Rugby and was played more of the CFL type football that we see today. So, not only did I see the Cup for the first time, it was also a century later! Yes even before the Titanic was built! Tremendous!

How about the Calgary University Football Dinos?!?!?

(Forget the Stampeders for a minute; I'm hoping to be bragging about them next week)

Back to the Dinos, What the? Where the? Who the? When the?

 Wow!

The Calgary Dinos have been most excellent this past season.

A regular season record of 7-1, the Dinos finished off the season with 7 wins! The only loss, well gather round, here's how it went down. The Dinos and the University of Saskatoon started the season against each other. In a high scoring affair The Dinos failed to snatch the first game of the season. You see in overtime, risk taker head coach Blake Nill decided to go for a 2 point conversion and a win as opposed to leaving the field with a miserable tie. Gutsy move but the Dinos failed on the attempt and started off the season with a 34-33 loss. The season moved on and the Dinos did not lose another and finished 2nd place to those darn Toonheads.

A GOOD MOVIE!!! The Men Who Stare at Goats

So I went and checked a flick last night at Empire theatres Up in Country Hills last night. Comfy seats, tasty popcorn (really dig the Dill Pickle seasoning!) and an incredible movie!

Seriously have you tried the seasoning for Popcorn?!

As for the film," The Men Who Stare At Goats" well I just 'knew" that it would be a gooder. (Yes, "knew" is an intended pun)

Have you heard about it? Maybe had a vision for it in a dream? You see the movie is about ESP, the Paranormal, and spirituality and how it could be used in the U.S Army. A division for this was actually created in the late 70's and it was called the New Earth Army.

Government Flu

What a mess the Federal and Provincial donkeys have brought upon themselves and to the general public with the H1N1 vaccines. The scare tactics made me believe the hype at first aswell.

"Oh yes fellow Canadians fear not, enough Swine Flu vaccine is available for every Canadian" is the first load of crap we got. Medical personnel, Pregnant Women, Calgary Flames players or anyone else on the high risk list were to go first, hmmm really? Well that only sorta happenned. You see no one working at the vaccination clinics wanted to screen any individual as this is not the Soviet Union. Fair enough.

6-0!!! Broncos silence them Critics!

How about them Denver Broncos eh! New coach, new QB, 8 new starters on the defence and a 6-0 record going into week 7! How did this happen?!

Well, I think you first have to think of the Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and his foresight.

You see last year, the Broncos with a pretty good offence and very shaky defence were sitting with an 8-5 record only to lose the last 3 games and miss out on the playoffs. It was a feeling of shock, anger and relief. Yes I said relief. You see if the Broncos would have made the playoffs then that would have set up a game against Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts and once again like so many recent seasons (like 7) Manning would have lit up the Broncos defence.

Retro Red!

Well the Calgary Flames are into their 30th season as a franchise and are commemorating by wearing their retro full red jerseys' for a few games during the 09/10 campaign. After watching the first couple home games this season in a winning effort over the Canucks and Canadiens, the retro red jersey definitely took me down memory lane. I'd see Conroy #24 handling the puck and I'd get flashes of Jim Peplinski  back in the 80's or when Glencross #20 would get into scuffle and my mind automatically thought of Gary Suter and this went on all freakin' game for both games! Iginla #12 was Hakan Loob, Adam Pardy #7 was Joe Mullen, and well you get the idea. The red jersey was the Flames identity. So why did the NHL organization stray?

"We've all been there"

Oh c'mon admit now, you've heard the 4 comforting words "we've all been there" before.

The phrase is intended to say "glad it's you and not me this time." Yet what is this "time" that gets us all into such a predicament. Well let me share with you a completely made up example and see how it would relate with the time you heard people say to you...We've all been there.

And the story begins.

You walk into Morgan's Pub for Monday Night Football, ready to have as much fun as possible. It's the first of many Monday nighters of the NFL season. Double header, you're wearing your favourite and very beaten up #7 Elway jersey, Oh yeah life is good. Let's not forget the Sunshiny day with temperatures unseasonably in the mid to high 20's, patio open with a magnificent TV and a late summer cheer amongst the good peeps hanging around the bar or being outside absorbing the Sunshine a with bucket o' Bud. Yup life can't get much better. Not only that but there is a half time bowl in the mix where 5 brave soldiers tackle, er, I mean take on the game of drinking, catching, hopping tires, attempt at quarterback, being a running back and a place kicker all for NFL merchandise!!! "Wow this is going to be fun" I think, um I mean one thinks to them self. You are on top of this World....FOOTBALL, BEER, MORGAN'S CHEERLEADERS HALALUJA!!!!! Are you with me? The same excitement goes for Golf tournaments, wedding/anniversary gatherings, Christmas parties et cetera.

Okay Music/Movie stuff! The other night i was flipping through Bell Expressview and i came across a movie called What We Do Is Secret. The movie is all about the Los Angeles Punk Band The Germs and their lead singer Darby Crash...so in preparation for the movie, i wanted to know more about Darby and the rest of the band so i did some quick research. Glad i did as it prepped me for the movie so i could follow along easier! (i'm an idiot when it comes to following movies. haha) and it also gave information about another member of the Germs, Pat Smear.

So over the past year I've toiled with the idea about joining Twitter that is becoming quite popular, but from what lots of people had told me was that it is just like Facebook status updates except without all the things that Facebook has to offer. So with my thought process, one social site is enough and stayed away...sure as hell didn't need two of these sites ruling my life....so life went on.

Recently I noticed that our Drive Home guy Reaper had started twitting (http://twitter.com/RideHomeShow), and if Reaper was taking the time to do some twitting then maybe it had some merit so I signed up.

About freakin' time! You see we are all to blame for doing something other than driving behind the wheel. Whether its typing out a text, talking on the cell phone or fiddling with the radio. Here's why i had to write about it.

The other day while I was out for a walk I almost got hit at a cross walk by a lady driving while on her phone. This how it went down. I approach cross walk and so does she in her car. She stops at stop sign i proceed to walk across. AS I start crossing, she starts going and at this point I am already half way across the street and she drives right by me while chatting away. I snapped! Her window open i yelled a few expletives at her into her open window...I was so mad! I'm just glad that I didn't throw my ipod at her....A few hours later driving on the Deerfoot another chap was going 80 KM/H in the fast (left) lane, Funny as you may have guessed, he was on his phone....As passed him he looks over at me and I just shake my head.
