All Summer Long
Been awhile for the blog, busy, busy, busy. Actually, can't tell a lie....I've been ducking out of work early to soak up what summer we've been getting. Which also means, most of my recreational time has been spent on the back deck, cold one in hand and the stereo playing records. A few things I've learned during this summer of spinning....
R&B and old Funk are great for the hot afternoons. Sly & The Family Stone, Parliament, old (pre 1975) Stevie Wonder and Macy Gray's first record in particular.
Beach Boys are also great for sunny days, but only the 60's stuff. If you own "Kokomo", fine yourself and then go get some old stuff.
You can never go wrong AC/DC's "If You Want Blood.....You Got It" anytime, day or night.
Side 2 of Jeff Beck's "Truth" is possibly the coolest campfire record you'll ever hear. Has to be with lights off except the fire light.
Everybody loves the second half (record 2) of Soundgarden's "Down On The Upside" and they don't realize it till they hear it.
I wish I had a guitar that sounded as cool as Duane Eddy's in "Rabble Rouser"
Chicks dig old blues. Not white guys like Clapton and Vaughan, they like that too. But they really like 50's blues like Howlin Wolf (a personal fave) John Lee Hooker and Jimmey Reed. They just don't know it till they hear it. BUT, only bust out the blues later at night, when things are winding down, you're just chillin' and maybe looking to close the deal.
Chicks also dig Johnny Cash. His best stuff was recorded between 1955 and 1965. Throw on old Johnny anytime and people dance around the ring of fire (sorry, couldn't resist)
Some albums that will always get a, "I haven't heard this album forever" or "this a great record" and work at any time....
Kiss - Destroyer
The White Stripes - Elephant or De Stijl (any Stripes on vinyl is good bet)
David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
Pearl Jam - Ten (the new remix version of vinyl is stellar!)
The Who - Live At Leeds
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Now I Got Worry (tough to find, but well worth it)
ZZ Top - Eliminator
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
Offspring - Ixnay On The Hombre
The Clash - The Clash
