You wanted the best?
So I've been getting ready for the big Kiss concert next week the only way I know how, listening to lots of Kiss records.
Like a lot of people who grew up in the late 70's/80's, I was introduced to Kiss by older brothers. I had posters of them on my wall and didn't even know they were a rock band when I was 6 or 7 years old. Eventually I discovered the music when I started down my rock and roll journey years later. But I vividly remember my brother getting a phone call from his friend and then saying, "Kiss is on TV and they're using magic!!" It was 1978 and the movie was, "Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park".
When looking at it now, the movie is pretty terrible, bad acting, lame plot, cheesy FX. But for a 7 year old kid back then, it was the coolest thing! They were flying through the air for crying out loud!!
As far as the music goes, I never became a huge fan. Like most bands, they're best work is in the first few albums. In their case, the first 4 stand out as my favourites. The first album was Kiss (1973) then, Hotter Than Hell (1974), Dressed To Kill (1975) and Destroyer (1976). They also released Alive in 1975 and it is definitely a landmark and great record. But, I kind of enjoy the original studio versions from the first 3 albums. They have a cool sound and vibe to them. Hotter Than Hell being a particular favourite of mine, some great riffs on there.
Then with Destroyer, they hit it out of the park. Not only one of my favourite albums, but it's one of the greatest albums of all time! The definitive Kiss record and a watermark in rock and roll that few have managed to reach. Chances are they'll play at least half that album when they come through town.
I've got my Destroyer t-shirt all good to go and I'm ready to shout it out loud with great expectations to become the king of the night time world! Beth I hear you calling but, do you love me? The god of thunder and the flaming youth are ready for sweet pain in Detroit rock city!
