At the height of the grunge movement (1991-1994), no other band was name-checked as often as an influence/trailblazer as The Melvins were. Having issued several underground classics before the Seattle sound hit the mainstream, the veteran band was rewarded with a major-label contract shortly afterward (Atlantic Records), resulting in such titles as 1993's Houdini (which longtime admirer Kurt Cobain produced parts of), 1994's Stoner Witch, and 1996's Stag. None of the albums managed to follow their "offspring" to the top of the charts, but there were quite a few sludgy gems included, many of which serve as the basis for the Europe import compilation Melvinmania: The Best Of The Atlantic Years 1993-1996.
