The Mistreaters lay down punk rock that's so big, thick, and meaty on Playa Hated To The Fullest it seems like the musical equivalent of one of those 72-ounce steaks some restaurants will let you have for free if your body will permit you to eat it in under an hour. David John Henry Mistreater's deep, rubbery basslines and Christian Mistreater's precise, rapid-fire drumming provide a solid steel framework for Dusty Mistreater's buzzy, howling slabs of guitar and Christreater's gale-force vocals, and after kicking into fifth gear with the opening cut, "The Other Man," this set doesn't stop blazing until crashing into a veritable wall of guitars (featuring six-string contributions from several Dirtbombs) on "Ol' Sugarfoot." (Actually, the pace does let up at midpoint for one slow one, "She's My Witch," but it's just spooky enough to keep the tension at high ebb while letting you catch your breath.) The heavy downstroke of the guitars and Christreater's slight vocal resemblance to James Hetfield suggest The Mistreaters may have a few metal skeletons in their closet, but their melodic efficiency and waste-no-time delivery (running through a dozen tracks in 30 minutes) offer plenty of kicks for those who like their rock hard and fast, regardless of genre limitations, and producer Jim Diamond gets it on plastic with all the grit intact.
