Three Days Grace...smokin' interview!
I got to hang out with some contest winners for the Three Days Grace soundcheck party yesterday. Or more fitting, I got to wait around with some contest winners. As is per usual in this business, your always waiting for the band. I think we ended up spending an hour and a half waiting in the lobby before finally going in. Although it's a long hour and a half when you're standing in that corrider, it wasn't really that long in retrospect. There's been times that I've waited upwards of 3 hours to do an interview, only to be told they wouldn't get there till after I had to leave.
Anyway, we got in and it was very cool. They went through a few tunes, even playing an instrumental version of "I Don't Care" while Adam was off stage for a few minutes. I took some pictures and you can check em out in the photo gallery. It's pretty cool to see a band playing on their full stage set up and there's nobody in the building.
So after the soundcheck, the band and I went to the press room to do an interview. Before we get started though, Adam and Barry had a quick smoke while I set up my stuff. And as I'm doing that, I bend over to pick something up and feel a big "riiiip" in the back of my pants! I kid you not, I'm setting up to interview Three Days Grace and I rip a huge tear in the seat of my jeans! So I play it cool, as nonchalant as possible and do the only thing I can....I sat down. So they come back out and we start the interview.
And then something even funnier happens! First a little back story.....
I last interviewed Three Days Grace in 2006. It was a Saturday night show and they came by the station in the afternoon. Just as I was bringing them to the control room, the fire alarm started to go off in the! It was a false alarm, so no fire, but the alarm wasn't turning off and it was LOUD! There's no way to mute the alarm in the studio and it's on the ceiling, so Barry had to actually stand on a chair and hold a jacket up the alarm while we did the interview.
Fast forward to me chatting with Barry and Adam yesterday and one of the first things I ask them is if they remember the "fire alarm interview". They do and we have a good laugh about it and carry on. And then.......the fire alarm goes off in the Corral!! Neil and Brad were doing an interview in the same room, they turned to us and we all said the same thing, "We were just talking about that!" It was nothing short of hilarious! What are the odds of me interviewing the same band years later, in a different building and the fire alarm goes off again. I'm telling ya, you cannot make this stuff up!
I finished my interview, the guys were very cool and from all accounts tore it up on stage that night! Next time they come to town though, we're doing an interview in a fire alarm free zone!
