Calgary Votes - 2013
They are at the post and they are off! The election signs are up and the debates have begun, the big question is can anyone come close to beating the incumbent sometimes referred to as his Royal Purple-ness?
During the post flood weeks Nenshi received Superman like status with huge throngs lining up just to shake his hand, but there were those that thought the public consultation on the 52 million was nothing more than a circus with the mock game show with Brett Wilson and the carefully selected panel.
Then there were those who never forget that property taxes have gone up some 32% over the three years the Mayor has been at the helm.
I ran into Dave Bronconnier at a funeral recently and he seemed as happy as a kid in a candy store that he no longer had to deal with things like dealing with the likes of Rick Bell and guys in the media.
Nenshi on the other hand likes to get his message out by twitter, sometimes not well explained like the battle with Ezra Levant. That was a debacle.
But most I talk to and that would be in the thousands seem to think Nenshi will win an a cakewalk, by the lousy turnout for Mondays debate I’m not sure there are a whole lot of people that will be engaged to cast a ballot.
John Lord said he was the best choice to meet the Mayor head on with the issued but he stumbled terribly when he said he was cooking ribs in a competition south of the border in Kansas City
And couldn’t make the debate.
I am sure those working on the campaign had a bone to pick with him and said, “You’ve got to be kidding? Miss the first debate? are you crazy?"
I think he realized they had a point and high tailed it home on the next flight changed his suit and walked in with minutes to spare.
Other candidates include Bruce Jackman, JJ Sunstrum, Sandra Hunter, Milan Papez and Norm Perrault, hardly household names so it will be hard to get the word out.
The best way to stay in touch is twitter especially if you want to hear what the others have to say.
If I was a betting man I think the general population hasn’t forgotten about the 52 million but the way the head honcho handled the flood disaster is still top of mind. I can’t wait to see if I’m right or wrong on October 21tst.
In the meantime if John Lord wants to get a hand up lets try some of those ribs?
