The great swing, stride, and jazz pianist Dick Hyman explores 18 songs by the team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart on this enjoyable CD; a companion disc has him interpreting songs by Rodgers & Hammerstein. Of these 18 selections, most are well known other than the obscurity "Wait ‘Til You See Her." But it does not matter how often these songs have been recorded, for Hyman comes up with fresh variations and surprising twists by giving the tunes unexpected rhythms and tempos. He always keeps the rich melodies close by and while displaying his virtuosity, his goal was clearly to serve each song well. This CD is not only recommended to Hyman's admirers in the jazz world but to those from the Broadway and popular music world who love these timeless melodies.
