Album Review

Probably the weakest volume of the Dr. Demento collection, Dr. Demento Presents: Greatest Novelty Records of All Time, Vol. 5: 1980's gathers the '80s funniest singles, including Weird Al Yankovic's "Eat It" and "Another One Rides the Bus," as well as Bob MacKenzie's "Take Off." Julie Brown's "Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun," Marvin the Paranoid Android's "Marvin I Love You," and Jump 'n' the Saddle Band's "The Curly Shuffle" are some of the collection's other highlights, but overall the songs just aren't as quirky or individual as they are in the prior collections -- novelty rock's over-reliance on parodying pop songs and musical trends (Rodney Dangerfield's "Rappin' Rodney" is a perfect example) begins here. Still, there are enough funny moments on this compilation to please die-hard novelty rock fans.
