In another departure for this ever-unpredictable pianist,
Roger Kellaway joins forces with his friend, fellow Ojai (California) resident and sometime collaborator
Gene Lees in an informal, bare-bones recital of their songs and a few by others. Recorded in a home studio on the north shore of Long Island, these are practically living room demos, acoustically flat and intimate, made more so by
Lees' casually uninflected vocals. But
Kellaway's imagination is on the loose again, sometimes as busy as a bee, sometimes spare and reflective, sometimes impressionistic, his piano imbued with a momentum and will of its own. The tunes are often lovely, the lyrics well-crafted but in need of a professional vocalist to make them come alive.
