For a band like
Hoobastank that’s made their name on driving, guitar-heavy post-grunge, an album like
Is This the Day? is a pretty radical departure. Wanting to give fans a new look at some of their older material, the band hit the studio to record acoustic versions of their hits, creating an album that feels like an
MTV Unplugged performance without an audience there to provide atmosphere. These stripped-down performances show off the band's plaintive side, allowing their emotional side to shine through on the new arrangements. While the album could almost serve as a best-of, anyone who is unfamiliar with the band won’t want to make this their jumping-on point, but for anyone who has stuck with
Hoobastank for a while,
Is This the Day? should offer something to keep them busy until the next studio album arrives.
