Album Review

This is the CD reissue of the first LP by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa (Philips, 1967). Each one had already recorded singles the year before, when the Vila Velha gang had participated in the staging of Arena Conta Bahia. This album is completely different from the expected, knowing that in the following year Veloso would be releasing the highly revolutionary Caetano Veloso, where the Tropicalia movement was launched. Here, all you will hear is pure bossa nova, in straightforward arrangements by Dori Caymmi, Francis Hime, and Roberto Menescal. Veloso and Costa, who would eventually become accomplished singers, were still beginners, with very restricted vocal abilities -- which is less conspicuous in the bossa style -- but Veloso was already composing splendid melodies and lyrics. With the exception of three songs, the rest of the 12 tracks were composed by Veloso, highlights being the all-time hit "Coração Vagabundo," "Avarandado," and "Domingo."
