Album Review

The delightful I'm Entitled to You pairs Chubby Jackson with vocalist Jackie Paris for a bold, energetic set that captures the bassist at the height of his powers. His rhythm work here is forceful yet nimble, played with the authority of a bandleader and the humility of a sideman. Given the presence of fellow Woody Herman alum Bill Harris on trombone, it's little surprise the record boasts a joie de vivre recalling their Second Herd-era collaborations, but I'm Entitled to You is very much its own beast. Paris' contributions to "Big Fat Nothin'," "Do Me Sump'n," and the title cut are the obvious standouts, but the instrumentals are no less lively or appealing.
