Altoist
Marshall Royal's second and final Concord recording as a leader is the equal of his first. With the assistance of pianist
Monty Alexander, guitarist
Cal Collins, bassist
Ray Brown and drummer
Jimmie Smith,
Royal digs into a variety of swing standards (including "Mean to Me," "Avalon" and "I Got It Bad") and two of his basic originals. Throughout the date,
Royal shows that in the 1980s, he was one of the few more significant survivors of the swing alto tradition. This fine release is worth picking up, but has not yet been reissued on CD.
