I would like to introduce you to the Canadian Transplant Association (CTA).
The CTA has been supporting organ donation for 25 years promoting the Gift of Life that has saved thousands of Canadians with life-threatening disease. One of the organization’s major initiatives is the Canadian Transplant Games - Olympic-style sports especially for organ transplant recipients. Calgary has the honour of hosting the Games July 16-22, 2012.
This week-long event encourages transplant recipients to live an active, healthy lifestyle and enjoy the new life they have been given by someone else’s courage and ultimate generosity. The events include badminton, swimming, track and field, tennis, golf, lawn bowl and floor hockey to name just a few.
We anticipate over 300 participants and their families will travel from all over Canada to attend the 2012 Games. Athletes range in age from five to over seventy-five. The tenacity and vitality of these athletes is awe-inspiring and humbling. They, literally, have a second chance at life. These games honour the families that lost a loved one and gave that precious gift of life to another. At the Games, transplant recipient athletes and supporters share their incredible stories and form a lasting bond with new friends from across Canada.
